Abstract

IT is an honor to speak at this assembly of neurological scientists, representatives of other disciplines, and guests who have come together to discuss education in the neurological sciences. I find myself in somewhat of a quandary. As a teacher I have known what it is like to publish your lecture notes in the form of a textbook which then becomes suggested reading. This leaves the teacher two future alternatives, either to cancel or revise his traditional lectures. I was most reluctant to distribute the summary statement of our survey findings if its distribution was also to be followed by my appearance as a plenary session speaker. Being unwilling to review my distributed notes, especially because the full report will later be made available, I cast about for an area of general educational concern which had not been previously reviewed or was not likely to be covered in
