Abstract

The range of meanings assigned to the egg through the ages provides a veritable Paradise for the ardent iconologist. As the image of the beginning and end of all mankind the egg became a symbol of the Conception of Christ and of Divine Love.1 The concept of life breaking through the shell was equated with the Resurrection,2 while the association of the egg with the rays of the sun was interpreted as the image of Divine Faith as early as St. John the Baptist.3 The egg in the nest was likened to the devout Christian “in Ferculo Eucharistico tutissimus.”4
