Abstract

ABSTRACT A mechanical system for harvesting live broiler chickens was constructed and evaluated. Included were a bulk-handling scoop structure mounted on a Bobcat tractor for collecting broilers from the broiler house floor and a self-propelled handling unit for moving and metering the collected broilers uniformly into bulk-handling containers. Broiler chickens were harvested mechanically from a clear span house with equipment developed during this research. The harvesting capacity of the tractor-mounted pick-up unit was 1,500 broilers per hour and the capacity of the handling unit was approximately 5,000 broilers per hour. Further research is required for the development of a more efficient system for moving broilers from the broiler house floor to the handling unit.
