Abstract

Abstract A mechanism is proposed for the formation of dislocation networks during plastic deformation. Screw dislocations moving on a primary glide plane interact, forming attractive junctions with a dislocation forest with suitable Burgers vectors, as has been described in detail by Whelan (1959). It is suggested that trapped dislocations are caused to move by the acting shear stress on the plane of forest as wefts on a power loom where forest dislocations serve as warp threads.
