Abstract

The chain oxygen dynamics of (RE)Ba 2Cu 3O 7−x have been investigated using a Monte Carlo simulation of the asymmetric next nearest neighbor Ising (ASYNNNI) model. The effect of an electric field is to change the basal plane coordination of Cu ions, resulting in a change in the carrier doping of the CuO 2 planes. Our results from this model are in agreement with experiment and suggest a novel mechanism for the electric field effect.
