Abstract

A simple mechanical device is described which measures the energy expenditure in calories. The basis for construction of the device was the observation of a linear correlation between the oxygen consumption and the volume of expired air. Measurements on a large number of subjects doing various activities by means of this calorimeter correlated significantly with measurements by direct oxygen consumption. Multiple studies on a single subject at increasing energy expenditures showed a maximum difference in any set of 7.8 per cent. For the first time it is possible for a patient to measure and understand the quantitative aspects of energy expenditure.
