Abstract

Negative muons stopped in a propane bubble chamber form mesic atoms with carbon nuclei. Subsequently they either decay by their usual mode or interact with the nucleus. Based on a sample of 2 519 mesons, the probability for interaction is found to be (7.4±0.8)%, and the total absorption rate of muons in carbon becomes (0.36±0.04)·105 s−1. The result is found to be in satisfactory agreement with theory.
