Abstract

Abstract The vertical distribution of HCI, from 15 to 40 km, was measured with a Michelson interferometer on board the stra toprobe balloon flight launched from the National Scientific Balloon Facility at Palestine, Texas, 32°N, on 8 November 1978. The mixing ratio increases from 0.1 ppbv at the troposphere near 17 km to 1.4 ppbv at the balloon float altitude of 40 km. The average mixing ratio above 40 km is 1.2 ppbv. This profile shows good overall agreement with those measured by other investigators. Comparison with a model calculation by Miller et al. (1981) exhibits a satisfactory fit except in the vicinity of 25‐km altitude where the observed profile indicates a minimum that is not present in the model profile.
