Abstract

The rate of the decay π + → π o + e + + ν (ref. [1]), the beta decay of the π +, has been measured by means of a counter scheme, in which this process is detected with an efficiency of 22.4 ± 0.8%. For 1.48 × 10 11 π + coming to rest in the apparatus, 332 ± 10 pion beta decays have been observed. This leads to a branching ratio R π +→π o + e + + ν π +→μ ++ν =(1.00 0.08 −0.10)×10 −8 corresponding to a decay rate λ π + π o = (0.38 −0.04 +0.03) sec −1 in good agreement with the prediction of the CVC theory, λ π + π o (CVC) = (0.393 ± 0.002) sec −1.
