Abstract
A high-speed wheelset was instrumented on axle and on wheels with strain gauges and that signals were acquired by radio telemetry systems. The instrumented wheelset being developed went through a special calibration procedure that utilized a wheelset roller rig on which known load time histories were applied generating running conditions similar those encountered in service and providing a more real condition to perform the calibration process. The calibration of the measuring system was improved by following a minimization approach to estimate the optimal transfer function between the strain measurements and the wheel/rail contact forces. A field test was performed on high speed lines and the measurements integrated contact loads and stresses results with GPS information. A specific program was prepared for data processing to obtain load spectra. The developed system has been verified to assure sufficient durability for continuous measurement on in-service trains and sufficient accuracy after various stand tests.
