Abstract

Health professionals in general practice regularly encounter women suffering from symptoms associated with urinary tract infections (UTIs). Uncomplicated UTIs have a high incidence and are commonly associated with recurrence. The widespread use of antimicrobials to treat community-acquired infections has resulted in the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. A rational approach to the pharmacotherapy of UTIs should therefore be followed and non-antimicrobial interventions be considered where possible.
