Abstract

Mass spectrometry has been applied to the study of radicals for many years. These efforts mainly involve the determination of ionization, appearance energies of radicals and the study of radical-molecule reactions. Hvistendahl and Undheim first reported that radicals produced during the volatilization stage were observed in the electron ionization (EI) mass spectra of certain cinnolinium iodides. Under chemical ionization(CI)conditions, radicals were first observed by McEwen and Rudat using a radical-trapping reaction, which was found to be at a sufficiently rapid speed in the gas phase to compete with ionization pro
