Abstract

The mass spectra of squaric acid, croconic acid, rhodizonic acid, and of their oxidation products octahydroxycyclobutane, leuconic acid, triquinoyl, and also of the related compound tetra-hydroxy- p-benzoquinone have been studied. Characteristic features of the fragmentation of all these molecules are the elimination of carbon monoxide and ring contraction. The spectra of the acids show appropriate parent ion peaks, their oxidation products do not show parent ion peaks either of the fully hydrated or the fully dehydrated molecules.
