Abstract

Now that providing individual customization of products is an effective way to compete in the global economy, smart manufacturers are finding the way to overcome traditional mass production limitations. As the benefits of mass customization are realized through well designed information systems that provide direct links among value chain partners and integrate various business activities, the importance of information systems architecture in the delivery of customized goods can hardly be overemphasized. Drawing on concepts from the interrelated literature streams of organizational process-view, this paper examines the information systems requirements for mass customization and proposes an information system architecture framework for customized goods. This information systems architecture enables enterprise — wide integration, reduces systems complexity as well as the Bullwhip effect, and streamlines business processes in mass customization environment.
