Abstract

Older people are the largest group of patients in acute settings, and the risk of dementia rises with age. People with dementia do not function to capacity outside their normal environment, and illness and injury can place further strains on them. Staff working in non-specialist units may have difficulty coping with the person with dementia. They may inadvertently make it more difficult for the person to cope in a bewildering and difficult situation. This article aims to provide managers with a brief overview of dementia, the problems people with dementia face in acute settings and how to enable staff to provide high quality care to meet patient needs.
