Abstract

An integrated database refers to a collection of alphanumerical data and picture data. A management system for an integrated database is important in making better use of information in the database. An approach to an integrated database management system without labeling the picture data first is presented. The integrated database is organized logically as a set of relations. The attributes of relations can assume the data type “picture” in addition to the alphanumerical data types to take care of picture data. The language SEQUEL is extended to serve as an interface between the users and the system. Data migration and data compression, which are essential for picture data, are accomplished by the data definition facilities in the extended SEQUEL. The complicated I/O system in an integrated database is taken care of by the use of the concept of logical I/O systems and the use of a new data type device for attributes of relations. The major thrust of the proposed approach is to access picture data via their contents.
