Abstract

Cobalt atoms have been deposited in a xenon matrix at 12 K using pulsed Nd/YAG laser ablation and subsequently studied via magnetic circular dichroism and absorption spectroscopy. This study reveals that several assignments of the electronic transitions of vapor phase Co are in error. It is proposed that the z 4G 11/2 and z 4F 7/2 states should be exchanged. With this interchange, it is shown that better agreement with the Landé interval rule is obtained for both z 4G and z 4F manifolds.
