Abstract

1. The possibility is demonstrated of utilizing the magnesium-thermic method, as developed earlier for the synthesis of borides of the alkaline- and rare-earth metals, for producingborides of metals of groups V and VI of the periodic system. 2. Process parameters have been established for the production of vanadium, tantalum and chromium monoborides and diborides, as well as the higher molybdenum and tungsten borides Mo(W)2B5, whose compositions lie in the known homogeneity regions of these compounds. 3. The proposed technique is distinguished by technological simplicity, high productivity, a low cost of starting materials, and a high quality of the synthesized borides. 4. An examination is made of the chemistry of the reactions involved in the magnesium-thermic process for the production of borides.
