Abstract

Measurement of serum prolactin is required when assessing adolescents with menstrual disturbances to determine the presence of HPL. The etiologies of HPL are diverse, as shown in Table 1. Aside from the causes of true HPL, between 15% and 46% of samples from patients with HPL, the high prolactin levels can be skewed by the presence of macroprolactin. Macroprolactinemia is a benign, nonpathologic condition that is an often over-looked cause of HPL.
