Abstract

To reduce the system cost and make use of the spectrum of indoor visible light communication (VLC) channel, a novel modulation scheme based on M-ary position phase shift keying (MPPSK) is first introduced in VLC transmission. Soft decision decoding using a maximum posteriori (MAP) detector is proposed in MPPSK demodulator to combat against the false alarm error and wrong slot error caused by multipath distortion in VLC channel. Moreover, the modulation parameters are also optimized according to the calculation results of the channel delay spread in entire receiving plane. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed soft decision method can enhance the demodulation stability and significantly reduce the bit error rate (BER) at least 5 dB. Furthermore, the MPPSK modem with a special impacting filter can be easily applied to VLC transmission and make a favorable compromise among the system complexity, spectral efficiency and BER, which show the feasibility and validity of the proposed methodology.
