Abstract

This paper presents a low-cost, high bandwidth, and low noise fully differential main amplifier (FDMA) to be applied in optical communication systems. Employing the proposed multistage cascaded architecture and active inductor technology, the amplifier exhibits wide bandwidth performance with sufficient gain. Using AC coupled inputs DC-offset isolation, the cascaded identical gain stages obtain a strong immunity against the variations of temperature and process. With large bandwidth amplifier (LBA) application, the FDMA owns stronger driver ability. This design is fabricated in 0.5um CMOS technology for low cost applications. The measurement results show that the chip achieves a DC open loop gain of 30dB, a-3dB bandwidth of 863MHz, a input-referred noise density of 3.5nV/sqr(Hz). The chip consumes a power dissipation of 95.7mW from 3.3V power supply. Owing to the absence of the spiral inductive inductors, the active area only occupies 0.25 mm2.
