Abstract

Neutron diffraction and DC magnetization measurements on polycrystalline double perovskite Ca 2NiWO 6 were carried out to determine its low temperature magnetic structure. The compound has a monoclinic structure down to the lowest measured temperature (13 K). Magnetization measurements indicates that the sample has an antiferromagnetic ordering with a Néel temperature of ∼50 K. Our low temperature neutron diffraction measurements showed an antiferromagnetic alignment of Ni moments below 50 K. The magnetic moment of the Ni 2+ ions found from neutron diffraction was 2.2(1) μ B, at 13 K and was oriented within the b– c plane. An interesting correlation between Néel temperature and band width is found for some double perovskites including Ca 2NiWO 6.
