Abstract

In this article, a small Coplanar Waveguide (CPW) fed planar monopole antenna for ultra-wideband (UWB) applications is presented. It comprises of a combination of rectangular and elliptical shaped slot in the ground plane to achieve good impedance matching at low frequencies and a modified rectangular radiator fed by a strip line. The physical volume of the designed antenna is 15mm $\times18$mm$\times1.6$mm and has a voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) less than two bandwidth ranges from 3.1GHz to 10.6GHz. Good peak gain, stable and omnidirectional patterns in both the planes are achieved in the operating band. The designed antenna is much compact compared to the UWB antennas available in the previous literature. Simulations are carried out by a Finite Element Method (FEM) based HFSS software.
