Abstract
The design of a low cost, low technology container suitable for studying the survival of transmission stages of parasites or other organisms within aquatic or water-related environments is described. The container was tested over a period of 47 days in three environments (mains tap water, river water and cow faeces) in studies on the survival of oocysts of Cryptosporidium parvum. As well as facilitating repeated sampling, the containers prevented bacterial colonisation and allowed oocysts to remain in contact with the soluble matter of the selected environments throughout the study.
