Abstract
The flight and expulsion of Germans at the end and in the aftermath of World War II influenced both German post-war societies massively. They have led to controversial debates that persist today. Nonetheless, systematic research on movies that deal with the topic has only just begun. This essay reconstructs leading narratives about German refugees in both East and West German ‘Heimatfilme’ of the early post-war years and with which medial discourses they interacted.
