Abstract

A new method for the compensation of spherical aberration in a longitudinal beta-ray spectrometer is described. On the homogenous magnetic field is superimposed a correcting field generated by means of an special coil system placed inside the spectrometer. Theoretical and experimental investigations of the focussing properties are given and it is shown that the compensation coils gives a considerable reduction of the spherical aberration. With a 1 × 1 mm 2 source a relative halfwidth of 1.4 percent and an effective transmission of 5.2 percent was obtained. At a resolution of 1.9 percent the effective transmission was found to be 6.5 percent. A Ø 5 mm source gave a resolution of 3 percent.
