Abstract

A long-term support group for elderly people with vision loss is a relatively new idea. The Low-Vision Support Group of the University of Michigan's Turner Geriatric Clinic has been meeting since October 1979. Programs include classes in skills of independent living and a wide variety of other educational activities. The staff and the members have observed very positive benefits from membership in the group. This article describes the origins of the group, the group's activities, important considerations in running such a group, and the reasons for the group's success.
