Abstract

A novel 3,3‘-bipyridine-type linking ligand L (C26H22N4, py-CHN−(CH3)C6H3−(CH3)C6H3−NCH-py), which possesses two terminal pyridyl groups, was prepared by the Schiff-base condensation. In ligand L, the N···N separation between the terminal pyridyl groups is 18.253 A, with their nitrogen atoms at the meta positions (3,3‘) in a trans manner. A one-dimensional zinc coordination polymer [ZnL(NO3)2]n (1) and a two-dimensional cobalt coordination polymer [CoL1.5(NO3)2]n (2) were prepared from the corresponding metal nitrates and L by solvothermal reactions. In polymer 1, the ligands exhibit a cisoid coordination of the pyridyl nitrogens. Polymer 2 exhibits the structure of α-arsenic whose repeating unit consists of six Co metals and six L ligands to create a 114-membered ring with dimensions of ca. 40.28 × 20.65 A. Guest-containing cobalt polymers [CoL2(NO3)2]·X (X = benzene (3a) or toluene (3b)) could also be prepared.
