Abstract

Harry V. Jaffa came to argue that the proper understanding of the American founding required a blend of Aristotle and Locke. The article in which he first made this claim contains Jaffa’s own criticisms of this idea. These criticisms implicate the fundamental elements of his interpretation of the founding and help us grasp Jaffa’s understanding of political philosophy and its relationship to politics.
