Abstract

CDMA cellular slotted-ALOHA communication systems with open-loop power control suffer a drastic degradation of throughput under heavy channel loads. This degradation becomes a serious problem when systems offer services in which traffic control is difficult to implement. This paper proposes an adaptive transmission power control scheme to reduce throughput degradation under heavy channel loads. This scheme controls the target received power according to both channel load and mobile station location. The target received power for each mobile station is controlled to make use of the capture effect under heavy channel loads. Computer simulation validates the effectiveness of this scheme: throughput performance is improved and therefore the proposed scheme can expand the allowable load area. © 2000 Scripta Technica, Electron Comm Jpn Pt 1, 84(1): 31–39, 2001
