Abstract
Reviewing the debate on the origin of African theatre and drama shows that Zulu stage theatre owes its inception to Western intervention. The history of Zulu theatre shows further that it is, by and large, an informal and almost obscure endeavour. This picture contrasts sharply with the internationally popular sensation of Zulu theatre, namely UMabatha, which has been performed on numerous stages, both in South Africa and abroad. One of the reasons for the obscurity of Zulu plays is perhaps the abundance of indigenous performances that adequately provide, not only for entertainment, but also for sensitising and mobilising people.
