Abstract

The current article explores the issue of parents' prior experiences, and how that shapes their parenting style. Based on the standard proposed by Diana Baumrind, parenting styles are described with varying ratios of warmth and monitoring. While a great deal of work has investigated the role of parental style on various factors such as child deviance, behavioral issues, academic performance, and substance use, little to no research has considered the reverse directional relationship. This article explores the possible influence that individuals' prior substance use may have on the parenting style they adopt. The discussion includes previous research on substance use, parental style, and adolescent delinquency to advocate for the need of future research exploring this proposed correlation. The importance and potential implications of such research is outlined.
