Abstract

• WC-Co exhibits three IF peaks. Peaks P1 and P2 are related to the cobalt phase and P3 to the WC-WC grain boundaries. • IF peaks P1 and P2 coexist over several annealing processes. • The coating induces a temperature variation of the Peak P1, showing an effect of the coating on the cobalt bulk material. • Clear correlation between peak P1 temperature-shift and tool-life. • The damping process related to the Peak P1 may be related to a strain-glass transition occurring in the cobalt phase.
