Abstract

AbstractThis paper presents a novel method for simplification of line drawings which can retain the shape of a given object. By noting that natural shapes innately possess the property designated self‐similarity, the fractal dimension, one of the characteristics of fractal objects and a measure of complexity, is used as an index. With this index the degree of simplification can be quantified. In order to represent the approximation of a given object, the feature points are extracted by our analysis, whose basic idea was derived from Vector Tracer. Experimental results show the efficiency of our proposed method. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Syst Comp Jpn, 34(5): 1–13, 2003; Published online in Wiley InterScience (www.interscience.wiley.com).
