Abstract

The mining industry in Southeastern Kansas has left in its wake many bodies of water, strip-mine lakes, commonly called strip-pits or pits, which the average person thinks are ideal reservoirs for the production of fish. However, their yield in terms of fish production apparently has been far from expectations. This study represents the initial phase of a series of researches contemplated by the Department of Biological Science of Kansas State Teachers College, Pittsburg, Kansas in cooperation with the Kansas Forestry, Fish, and Game Commission for the purpose of improving fish production in the strip-mine areas of Southeastern Kansas.
