BackgroundProspective data examining the relationship between dietary protein intake and incident coronary heart disease (CHD) are inconclusive. Most evidence is derived from homogenous populations such as health professionals. Large community-based analyses in more diverse samples are lacking.MethodsWe studied the association of protein type and major dietary protein sources and risk for incident CHD in 12,066 middle-aged adults (aged 45–64 at baseline, 1987–1989) from four U.S. communities enrolled in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study who were free of diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease at baseline. Dietary protein intake was assessed at baseline and after 6 years of follow-up by food frequency questionnaire. Our primary outcome was adjudicated coronary heart disease events or deaths with following up through December 31, 2010. Cox proportional hazard models with multivariable adjustment were used for statistical analyses.ResultsDuring a median follow-up of 22 years, there were 1,147 CHD events. In multivariable analyses total, animal and vegetable protein were not associated with an increased risk for CHD before or after adjustment. In food group analyses of major dietary protein sources, protein intake from red and processed meat, dairy products, fish, nuts, eggs, and legumes were not significantly associated with CHD risk. The hazard ratios [with 95% confidence intervals] for risk of CHD across quintiles of protein from poultry were 1.00 [ref], 0.83 [0.70–0.99], 0.93 [0.75–1.15], 0.88 [0.73–1.06], 0.79 [0.64–0.98], P for trend = 0.16). Replacement analyses evaluating the association of substituting one source of dietary protein for another or of decreasing protein intake at the expense of carbohydrates or total fats did not show any statistically significant association with CHD risk.ConclusionBased on a large community cohort we found no overall relationship between protein type and major dietary protein sources and risk for CHD.

Major dietary protein sources and risk of coronary heart disease in women.

With the exception of fish, few major dietary protein sources have been studied in relation to the development of coronary heart disease (CHD). Our objective was to examine the relation between foods that are major dietary protein sources and incident CHD. We prospectively followed 84,136 women aged 30 to 55 years in the Nurses' Health Study with no known cancer, diabetes mellitus, angina, myocardial infarction, stroke, or other cardiovascular disease. Diet was assessed by a standardized and validated questionnaire and updated every 4 years. During 26 years of follow-up, we documented 2210 incident nonfatal infarctions and 952 deaths from CHD. In multivariable analyses including age, smoking, and other risk factors, higher intakes of red meat, red meat excluding processed meat, and high-fat dairy were significantly associated with elevated risk of CHD. Higher intakes of poultry, fish, and nuts were significantly associated with lower risk. In a model controlling statistically for energy intake, 1 serving per day of nuts was associated with a 30% (95% confidence interval, 17% to 42%) lower risk of CHD compared with 1 serving per day of red meat. Similarly, compared with 1 serving per day of red meat, a lower risk was associated with 1 serving per day of low-fat dairy (13%; 95% confidence interval, 6% to 19%), poultry (19%; 95% confidence interval, 3% to 33%), and fish (24%; 95% confidence interval, 6% to 39%). These data suggest that high red meat intake increases risk of CHD and that CHD risk may be reduced importantly by shifting sources of protein in the US diet.

Interactive effects of dietary protein source and exogenous protease on growth performance, immune competence and jejunal health of broiler chickens

A total of 672 male 7-day-old broiler chicks were used in a 14-day cage study to evaluate the interactive effects of dietary protein source and exogenous protease on nutrient digestibility and intestinal physiology. Birds were fed a common starter diet from Days 0 to 7 and switched to experimental diets from Days 7 to 21. Four corn-based dietary treatments were arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with factors being two major sources of protein [soybean meal (SBM) or canola meal] and diets offered with or without exogenous protease. Bodyweight gain and gain : feed were higher (P < 0.001) in the diets based on SBM than in the diets based on canola meal and protease was more effective (P < 0.05) in enhancing performance in SBM-based diets. Ileal nitrogen digestibility was increased (P < 0.01) by protease use in diets based on both major protein sources. However, ileal digestible energy was increased (P < 0.05) by protease only in the SBM-based diet resulting in an interaction between diet protein source and exogenous protease. Jejunal villus height tended to be higher (P = 0.07) in birds fed diets based on SBM and protease use increased (P < 0.05) crypt depth only in the SBM-free diets resulting in a significant interaction between protein source and protease use. Patterns of gene expression in jejunal tissue suggested that both dietary protein source and exogenous protease influence the expression of genes responsible for mucin secretion, amino acid transport and immune functionality in an age-dependent manner. It can be concluded that SBM may be a more suitable protein source for young broiler chickens than canola meal and that use of canola meal as a major source of dietary protein may have negative implications for performance, nitrogen digestibility and gut health. However, exogenous protease appears to be more compatible with substrates presented by SBM than is the case for canola meal based on advantages conferred in nutrient digestibility and performance. The beneficial effects of exogenous protease may be linked both to enhanced protein and energy digestibility and improved gut morphological characteristics, secretory and absorptive dynamics and immune resilience.

Dietary protein intake during pregnancy and birth weight among Chinese pregnant women with low intake of protein

BackgroundPrevious studies have yielded inconsistent results on the association between maternal dietary protein intake and birth weight. Moreover, little is known about the effects of dietary protein intake from different sources on fetal growth. This study aimed to investigate the associations of different dietary protein sources (total protein, animal protein, plant protein, and major dietary protein sources) during pregnancy with birth weight and the related adverse birth outcomes.Methods7310 women were recruited using a stratified multistage random sampling method at 0–12 months (median: 3; 10–90th percentile: 0–7) after delivery in Shaanxi, China. Maternal diets were gathered by a validated FFQ and other characteristics were collected by a standard questionnaire. Multilevel linear or logistic regression models were used to estimate birth weight changes or ORs (95% CIs) for adverse birth outcomes associated with different dietary protein sources during pregnancy.ResultsThe mean percentage of energy from total protein was 11.4% (SD 2.2), with only 27.4% of total protein derived from animal protein. Per 3% increase in energy from total protein, animal protein, and dairy protein was associated with birth weight increases of 19.4 g (95% CI 6.0–32.9), 20.6 g (4.8–36.5), and 18.2 g (4.7–31.7), respectively. Per 3% increase in energy from total protein, animal protein, and dairy protein was also associated with lower risks of low birth weight (LBW) (total protein: OR = 0.78, 95% CI 0.64–0.94; animal protein: 0.79, 0.65–0.96; dairy protein: 0.71, 0.56–0.91), small for gestational age (SGA) (total protein: 0.88, 0.79–0.98; animal protein: 0.87, 0.78–0.97; dairy protein: 0.81, 0.68–0.96), and intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) (total protein: 0.84, 0.72–0.98; animal protein: 0.86, 0.75–0.98; dairy protein: 0.78, 0.66–0.92). We observed no associations of plant protein and other major dietary protein sources with birth weight and the above birth outcomes. The results did not change when maternal protein was substituted for fat or carbohydrate.ConclusionsAmong Chinese pregnant women with low intake of protein, higher intake of dietary protein, in particular animal protein and dairy protein, is associated with higher birth weight and lower risks of LBW, SGA, and IUGR.

Prepregnancy Dietary Protein Intake, Major Dietary Protein Sources, and the Risk of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

OBJECTIVEDietary protein is an important modulator of glucose metabolism. However, studies regarding the association between dietary protein intake and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) risk are sparse. This study was to examine the association.RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODSOur study included 21,457 singleton pregnancies reported among 15,294 participants of the Nurses' Health Study II cohort between 1991 and 2001. Included pregnancies were free of chronic diseases before pregnancy or previous GDM. Generalized estimating equations were used to estimate the relative risks (RRs) and 95% CIs.RESULTSAfter adjustment for age, parity, nondietary and dietary factors, and BMI, multivariable RRs (95% CIs) comparing the highest with lowest quintiles were 1.49 (1.03–2.17) for animal protein intake and 0.69 (0.50–0.97) for vegetable protein intake. The substitution of 5% energy from vegetable protein for animal protein was associated with a 51% lower risk of GDM (RR [95% CI], 0.49 [0.29–0.84]). For major dietary protein sources, multivariable RRs (95% CIs) comparing the highest with the lowest quintiles were 2.05 (1.55–2.73) for total red meat and 0.73 (0.56–0.95) for nuts, respectively. The substitution of red meat with poultry, fish, nuts, or legumes showed a significantly lower risk of GDM.CONCLUSIONSHigher intake of animal protein, in particular red meat, was significantly associated with a greater risk of GDM. By contrast, higher intake of vegetable protein, specifically nuts, was associated with a significantly lower risk. Substitution of vegetable protein for animal protein, as well as substitution of some healthy protein sources for red meat, was associated with a lower risk of GDM.

Major Dietary Protein Sources in Relation to Pancreatic Cancer: a Large Prospective Study.

Current evidence is inconsistent about the association between dietary protein intake and risk of pancreatic cancer (PC). The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between total intake of major dietary protein sources and risk of PC in a large prospective study in Golestan Cohort Study (GCS). We examined the association of total intake of major dietary protein sources with risk of PC in the 50,045 participants (20,855 men and 28,255 women) of the GCS in northeastern Iran. Participants were aged 40 and older at baseline and actively followed from 2004 to the present time. Dietary data were collected using a validated semi-quantitative food-frequency questionnaire that was administered at baseline. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate Multivariable hazard ratios with 95% confidence intervals (CI). During 383,630 person-years of follow-up, 54 cases of pancreatic cancer were ascertained. There was only a statistically significant inverse association between risk of PC for the second versus lowest tertile of plant based protein intake in the first and multivariable models (HR = .27, 95% CI = .12-.64, HR = .28, 95% CI = .12 -.65 respectively); however, this association was not significant anymore when comparing the highest tertile with the lowest one, in the first and multivariable models (HR = .49, 95% CI = .19-1.24, HR = .52, 95% CI = .20-1.34 respectively). In this large prospective cohort, we did not observe any clear and consistent evidence for an association between main dietary.

Genomics of Phaseolus Beans, a Major Source of Dietary Protein and Micronutrients in the Tropics

Common bean is grown and consumed principally in developing countries in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. It is largely a subsistence crop eaten by its producers and, hence, is underestimated in production and commerce statistics. Common bean is a major source of dietary protein, which complements carbohydrate-rich sources such as rice, maize, and cassava. It is also a rich source of minerals, such as iron and zinc, and certain vitamins. Several large germplasm collections have been established, which contain large amounts of genetic diversity, including the five domesticated Phaseolus species and wild species, as well as an incipient stock collection. The genealogy and genetic diversity of P. vulgaris are among the best known in crop species through the systematic use of molecular markers, from seed proteins and isozymes to simple sequence repeats, and DNA sequences. Common bean exhibits a high level of genetic diversity, compared with other selfing species. A hierarchical organization into gene pools and ecogeographic races has been established. There are over 15 mapping populations that have been established to study the inheritance of agronomic traits in different locations. Most linkage maps have been correlated with the core map established in the BAT93 x Jalo EEP558 cross, which includes several hundreds of markers, including Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphisms, Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA, Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphisms, Short Sequence Repeats, Sequence Tagged Sites, and Target Region Amplification Polymorphisms. Over 30 individual genes for disease resistance and some 30 Quantitative Trait Loci for a broad range of agronomic traits have been tagged. Eleven BAC libraries have been developed in genotypes that represent key steps in the evolution before and after domestication of common bean, a unique resource among crops. Fluorescence in situ hybridization provides the first links between chromosomal and genetic maps. A gene index based on some P. vulgaris 21,000 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) has been developed. ESTs were developed from different genotypes, organs, and physiological conditions. They resolve currently in some 6,500–6,800 singletons and 2,900 contigs. An additional 20,000 embryonic P. coccineus ESTs provides an additional resource. Some 1,500 M2 Targeting Local Lesions In Genomes populations exist currently. Finally, transformation methods by biolistics and Agrobacterium have been developed, which can be applied for genetic engineering. Root transformation via A. rhizogenes is also possible. Thus, the Phaseomics community has laid a solid foundation towards its ultimate goal, namely the sequencing of the Phaseolus genome. These genomic resources are a much-needed source of additional markers of known map location for marker-assisted selection and the accelerated improvement of common bean cultivars.

Association of Major Dietary Protein Sources With All‐Cause and Cause‐Specific Mortality: Prospective Cohort Study

BackgroundDietary recommendations regarding protein intake have been focused on the amount of protein. However, such recommendations without considering specific protein sources may be simplistic and insufficient.Methods and ResultsWe included 102 521 postmenopausal women enrolled in the Women’s Health Initiative between 1993 and 1998, and followed them through February 2017. During 1 876 205 person‐years of follow‐up, 25 976 deaths occurred. Comparing the highest with the lowest quintile, plant protein intake was inversely associated with all‐cause mortality (hazard ratio [HR], 0.91 [0.86, 0.96]), cardiovascular disease mortality (HR, 0.88 [0.79, 0.97]), and dementia mortality (HR, 0.79 [0.67, 0.94]). Among major protein sources, comparing the highest with the lowest quintile of consumption, processed red meat (HR, 1.06 [1.01, 1.10]) or eggs (HR, 1.14 [1.10, 1.19]) was associated with higher risk of all‐cause mortality. Unprocessed red meat (HR, 1.12 [1.02, 1.23]), eggs (HR, 1.24 [1.14, 1.34]), or dairy products (HR, 1.11 [1.02, 1.22]) was associated with higher risk of cardiovascular disease mortality. Egg consumption was associated with higher risk of cancer mortality (HR, 1.10 [1.02, 1.19]). Processed red meat consumption was associated with higher risk of dementia mortality (HR, 1.20 [1.05, 1.32]), while consumption of poultry (HR, 0.85 [0.75, 0.97]) or eggs (HR, 0.86 [0.75, 0.98]) was associated with lower risk of dementia mortality. In substitution analysis, substituting of animal protein with plant protein was associated with a lower risk of all‐cause mortality, cardiovascular disease mortality, and dementia mortality, and substitution of total red meat, eggs, or dairy products with nuts was associated with a lower risk of all‐cause mortality.ConclusionsDifferent dietary protein sources have varying associations with all‐cause mortality, cardiovascular disease mortality, and dementia mortality. Our findings support the need for consideration of protein sources in future dietary guidelines.

Growth Performance of Smooth Marron (Cherax cainii) Fed Different Dietary Protein Sources

Fish farming including freshwater crayfish still has a dependency on the availability of fish meal as the main source of protein in feed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate alternative protein sources including poultry by-products, feather meal, lupine flour, soybean meal and meat, and bone meal for smooth marron (Cherax cainii) freshwater crayfish feed. A total of 150 juvenile marrons (9.09 ± 0.21 g) were kept for 90 days and distributed into 15 rearing tanks consisting of five treatments with three replications. The results indicated that there was no significant difference in the increase in biomass, survival rate, moulting rate (weight), feed efficiency ratio, and feed digestibility (P> 0.05). However, marron juvenile fed with a protein source of poultry by-products meal had the highest specific growth rate (0.31 ± 0.05 g / day). In addition, marron fed with fish meal protein resulted a significant increase in carapace length (P <0.05). Based on the digestibility test, it was found that the digestibility level of the feed ranged from 76.39 ± 0.01 - 79.11 ± 0.01% and replacement of fish meal had no significant effect on dry matter digestibility (P> 0.05). Overall, the results of this study indicate that the general growth performance of marron is not affected by the replacement of fish meal in the feed. Alternative protein materials can be used as a protein source to replace fish meal in marron feed so that the use of fish meal can be reduced.
