Abstract

Margaret Oliphant (1828–1897), was a novelist and literary reviewer for more than fifty years. She published a number of evaluations of the works of the Brontë sisters.Her successive reviews of Charlotte's novels and estimates of their influence on the subsequent course of fiction reflect the complexity facing a critic who, while subscribing to the generally accepted moral conventions governing the novel, could not but wholeheartedly respond to the power of Charlotte's artistic achievement.
