Abstract

A good many people have campaigned a long time for eliminating or at least curbing use of DDT. Carson and Commoner, and such groups as the Environmental Defense Fund, the Sierra Club, and the National Audubon Society come to mind. A good many others have tried to uphold the safety of DDT. Each faction has had its lunatic fringe as well as its dedicated and sincere adherents. Now, the argument should end. The report of the HEW Secretary's Commission on Pesticides and Their Relationship to Environmental Health makes that clear. While there seems little doubt that DDT has probably been a net benefit to man, it has simply proved too hazardous for continued use on anything like the scale of the past.
