Abstract

This paper shows how to reveal the principles of geology with art objects that seem at first glance to be unrelated to the science. Art works and cultural artifacts can be used to stimulate interest in geological fundamentals as effectively as photos and representational drawings of terrain normally can. Here, art and artifacts are presented during the course of a travelogue to the Incan ruins at Machu Picchu, an adventure wherein principles such as the rock cycle, plate tectonics, isostasy, and base level unfold as new vistas of scenery emerge. The adventure ultimately is meant to show that the arts and sciences are not necessarily mutually exclusive but that they can simultaneously enhance the human condition.
