Abstract

Length measurements at sea and from landings, were used to estimate discards of haddock( Melanogrammus aeglefinus L.) for three Icelandic demersal fisheries in 1988–2000. The available material allowed a yearly analysis of trawl discards. Discards in long-line and Danish seine fisheries were analyzed for combined data 1996–2000. The analysis is based on the assumption that discarding does not occur at lengths over 49 cm. This allows for calculation of a raising factor in order to raise proportional length distribution at sea to numbers. Proportions discarded at length are modeled as a logistic curve and used to calculate numbers discarded. The highest discards were observed in the demersal trawl fisheries, followed by long-line and Danish seine. A significant negative relationship was found between discard rate and the size of the catchable stock. The average annual discard for all gears, is 8.4 million fish, 13% of an average year class. In weight the average discard is 4852 t, 10% of landings.
