Abstract

A high resolution LEED study of hydrogen physisorbed on graphite at 10 K is reported. A sharp √3 × √3 superstructure is observed around a pressure of 10 −8 Torr. With increasing pressure, the superstructure pattern disappears probably due to the occurrence of a disordered state. The results are a clear example of electron diffraction from an adsorbed hydrogen monolayer in the absence of substrate reconstruction.
