Abstract

We give a brief review of the properties of supersymmetric extended object solutions in supergravity theories. Topics covered include the p-form charges carried by p-branes, i.e. (p + 1)-dimensional hyperplane solutions, and their relation to mass densities and preserved supersymmetry, dimensional reduction schemes, brane scattering, and the noncompact nonlinear σ-models underlying the “BPS instanton” solutions at the bottoms of p-brane dimensional reduction trajectories.
