Abstract

This chapter aims to illustrate the connections between pursuit of peace and education in Latin America, with a special focus on the relationship between schooling, education for peace and peacebuilding linking with the development of citizenship, as well as the role of international and regional organizations in these activities. The chapter draws attention to the case of Latin American regional organization, MERCOSUR, and its policies and practices concerning education for peace. The main argument is that this organization offers a new term for the promotion of peace and education. The chapter further provides a historical framework in line with the reforming of MERCOSUR to shed light on different ways by which education, peace, and international organizations become intertwined in Latin American region.
