Abstract
AbstractThe first fossil member of the family Nymphalidae (Lepidoptera) in Dominican amber and the first fossil nymphalid caterpillar is placed near the genus Smyrna of the tribe Coloburini (Nymphalinae) on the basis of the morphology, position and arrangement of its spines. The larva is regarded as prototypic ancestor near the Pycina-Vanessa lineage and its closest descendants probably occur in Central and South America, thus illustrating yet another case of disjunct distribution in the Dominican amber fauna. This represents the second family of butterflies reported from Dominican amber (previously only the Riodinidae). A summary of the confirmed cases of fossil Nymphalidae is presented.
