Abstract

The paper describes management experience gained during a project aimed at producing major components of system software. Specifically, the results of the research effort were an operating system, assembly language translator, a couple of high level language translators, a debugger, a linker, an editor, a version of text processor, and an integrating shell for partial automation of software development process. The research has been carried out dominantly in the university teaching setting, with several factors significantly influencing the scope and strategy of project management: 1. (a)development resources, used throughout the project, were rather inadequate; 2. (b) the project team kept changing during project duration; 3. (c) not insignificant part of the team were undergraduate students; 4. (d) overall project goals and requirements could not be frozen early enough; 5. (e) project management was of a distributed type. The result — as the software itself goes — turned out to be according to the goals and expectations. The experience gained in the area of project management is still being distilled.
