Abstract
This paper discusses various aspects of industrial fault diagnosis and presents a fault diagnosis system being currently implemented at a hot strip mill of a Finnish steel plant. The special features of this system are its large scale and its seamless real-time integration of product and process data. During the 20 man-year system development project we have learned much about the specification, design, and implementation of a large-scale diagnostic system. These experiences are highlighted in this paper in order to disseminate the most relevant knowledge to the professional community.
