Abstract
The design of a multistep avalanche chamber with an active area 55 × 55 cm 2 is presented. Tests were directed towards secondary light emission readout of the position of the avalanche using an image intensified CCD camera. The sparking limitation, net light emission and the avalanche size are discussed.
