Abstract

A 76 year old man presented with left peri-prosthetic hip infection with previous pelvic irradiation for rectal cancer. Hip dislocation during a Girdlestone procedure resulted in a significant bleed controlled by hip relocation and packing. Angiography revealed an external iliac artery pseudoaneurysm (A; arrow indicates origin of pseudoaneurysm from the external iliac artery). This was excluded by a covered stent (B; arrows [Viabahn 8 mm/10 cm; WL Gore & Associates, Flagstaff, AZ, USA]). After removal of the infected metal, the wound healed using vacuum assisted closure. The causative organism (Esherichia coli) was treated with eight weeks of meropenem in hospital.Image 1
