Abstract

useful information to someone whose research and teaching might be on the periphery of a field. For example, table π.∞ on page ∞∑∂, reproduced from a greyliterature source, lists nearly all the hydrological and water-quality models that I know. Other parts of the text describe all the factors that are known to influence shoreline erosion (page ∞≠∑–∞≠∏). The second reason to have it is to use it as ∞) a positive example of good description by scientists for a lay audience, and ≤) a negative example of using biased and loaded words and statements to conduct an argument. The third reason would be to use the book in an environmental science and public policy course. Going through the chapters in a class and critiquing the bias while learning from the excellent descriptions of problems, systems, models, societal and professional pressures, and alternatives would be a superb way for students to learn about both the narrow and broader aspects of environmental issues.
