Abstract
ABSTRACT Laminations are described from a sequence of marine shales in the Yorkshire Coal Measures. Variations in the thickness of the laminae through the sequence have been noted and also the changes in composition between the light and dark laminae. Based on the observed changes it has been deduced that the laminae are valves, and confirmation of this has been sought through a comparison with the varves in modern marine sediments.
